Effects of Palmul-tang(Bawu-tang) and Kamipalmul-tang(Jiaweibawu-tang) on the Recovery of Fatigue in Rats

Abstract
Objects: This experiment was performed with the objective of investigating the effects of Palmul-tang(Bawu-tang) and Kamipalmul-tang(Jiaweibawu-tang) on the lactic acid levels in plasma, and creatine phosphokinase(CPK) activities, lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) activities and glucose levels, which are known as materials related to fatigue, in serum in rats fatigued from high exercise.

Methods: On one hour before swimming exercise, the extracts of Palmul-tang(Bawu-tang) and Kamipalmul- tang (Jiaweibawu-tang) were orally administered to the rats (Sprague-Dawley) which had been raised in the controlled rearing system for two weeks, and the control group were fed with the equal amount of saline. And the lactic acid levels in plasma, creatine phosphokinase(CPK) activities, lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) activities and glucose levels in serum in rats were measured immediately after swimming exercise and thirty minutes thereafter.

Results:
1. The lactic acid levels in Palmul-tang(Bawu-tang) group and the lactic acid levels in Kamipalmul-tang(Jiaweibawu-tang) group statistically showed the significant difference compared with the control group(P<0.01).
2. Creatine phosphokinase(CPK) activities in Palmul-tang(Bawu-tang) group and Kamipalmul-tang(Jiaweibawu-tang) group decreased immediately after exercise and statistically showed the significant difference compared with the control group(P<0.05).
3. Lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) activities in Palmul-tang(Bawu-tang) group and Kamipalmul-tang(Jiaweibawu-tang) group did not statistically show the significant difference compared with the control group.
4. Glucose levels in Palmul-tang(Bawu-tang) group and in Kamipalmul-tang(Jiaweibawu-tang) group respectively showed the statistical significance compared with the control group(P<0.05, P<0.01).

Conclusion: Based on the above results, we know that Palmul-tang(Bawu-tang) and Kamipalmul-tang(Jiaweibawu-tang) have effects on the decrease of the lactic acid levels, creatine phosphokinase(CPK) activities and on the increase of glucose levels. So it could be concluded that Palmul-tang(Bawu-tang) and Kamipalmul-tang(Jiaweibawu-tang) have the effects on antifatigue, but with respect to observational error, Kamipalmul-tang(Jiaweibawu-tang) produces more reliable results than Palmul- tang(Bawu-tang).
